Mini-ITX box with Lindows pre-installed for £250

posted by martinb at 2004-03-24 20:00

  1. neuro_: Looks fugly.
  2. martinb: Mini-ITX mobo, but not a mini case
  3. martinb: However, maybe just the fella for parents...
  4. neuro_: Yeah - purchase, install Debian, deliver to parental types.
  5. martinb: Shame it's Lindows 2.0. And it's doing a good job of hiding on Evesham's site
  6. martinb is swithering between recommending Lindows or Xandros for the parental system. Both deb-based (and both do apt-get, you're not locked into the Lindows Click'n'Run wrapper), and bundle CrossOver (parents are Quicken locked in)

        3. neuro_: Gotta love it when a vendor says a box will "never have to be rebooted" ;)
        4. neuro_: Thing is, with big iron like that, they're probably right
        5. martinb: "Statistically, once every 50 years"
        6. martinb: And with banking systems, I for one welcome our Godzilla overlords
        7. neuro_: But I assume the zSeries have hotplugging etc, so that if slightly-less-than-CPU/RAM-critical component X dies, it can be swapped out and in again without a complete reboot
        8. martinb: Oh sure, otherwise you wouldn't be able to do the "modified with new parts every 3 to 4 years"
        9. genghis: By the way, Lester, Saturday was the 4th bus to burn up. See yesterday's 2lmc

Microsoft hit by record EU fine

posted by emkay at 2004-03-24 11:56

        1. emkay: Software giant Microsoft must pay a fine of 497m euros ($613m; £331m) for abusing its dominant market position, the EU has ordered.
        2. martinb: "Record" meaning in this case "Of an unprecedented level of insignificance"
        3. garrettc: "Microsoft claims that it should not be fined at all because it did not know its behaviour would breach EU law." - Erm... since when ignorance of the law become a defence. And WTF are they paying all those lawyers for anyway?
        4. martinb: More at elReg. Interesting additional orders with the fine - not only the expected unbundling of WMP, but also to publish whatever it takes in order for rival vendors' servers "to achieve full interoperability with Windows PCs and servers, and it must provide updates where necessary."
        5. martinb can hear the Samba team salivating already
        6. genghis: The real 'crown jewels' in this case isn't CIFS, but MAPI

The "Windows Power User" which knows Windows from the beginning, knows how to keep his system clear and safe. He is quite unhappy with Windows for the obvious reasons. But he is used to the "reboot-solution" and doing everything without a manual, not even really knowing what is going on."
